This piece reflects suggestions from advocates to protect those who are at risk for domestic violence. If you are at risk, call a domestic violence hotline in your area to help plan for you and your child's safety or to discuss other personal safety concerns.

Store a suitcase with a friend or neighbor so that it cannot be discovered.

Pack:
  -
A disposable cellular phone for emergencies only
  -An extra set of clothes for yourself and your children
  -An extra set of keys to the house and car
  -Cash along with an extra checkbook or savings account book
  -Identification and other important papers such as birth certificates, social security cards,

    marriage certificate, medical records and driver's license
  -A favorite toy, doll or book for each child
  -A list of important phone numbers
