Suspension
The degenerative diseases of dementia are represented through a wing-back chair and shower stool footrest, reupholstered in a fabric design made from images of garments donated to the project by families of dementia patients. A life preserver with various items attached, is exhibited near the chair while granny square fragments, crocheted from recycled yarn and strips of garments swirl about the chair as part of the tableau. Like a dementia patient’s propensity to confabulate, or fill in memory gaps with imaginary details or invented words when the
right ones are not available, the aesthetic of this tableau may seem random and slightly nonsensical.
Yet, its repetitive composition of loud and unexpected fabrics and prints possesses a soothing rhythm.
